Internships and Work Experience
Internships can be a true win-win situation: Companies get an opportunity to utilize
unpaid labor and find their employees of the future. And interns get to learn the
ropes, gain real-world experience, and build up their resumes for the post-graduation
job search.
Cuyamaca College has a process for student internships (work experience) that conform to The California Division of Labor Standards and Enforcement. Students wishing for an unpaid internship develop a plan with their internship course instructor and determine what they want to accomplish. The employer agrees to provide experience that will fulfill that plan and the employers needs in skill application and schedules the student during available hours. The student and course instructor prepare the paperwork, the employer approves the student's time sheet and completes a short evaluation at the end of the internship. The faculty member will meet with the employer on site twice during the semester to ensure the internship is going well.
Insurance and liability are assumed by the college, there is no insurance obligation to the employer. Students may be paid as well during their internship if the employer desires. Students earn one college credit for every 60 hours of unpaid internship and one credit for every 75 hours of a paid internship. Students who complete an internship gain needed experience and become highly employable, most often by the companies for which they intern.
