Greetings! As the end of spring approaches, we’re looking ahead to the summer and the fall. In the interest of helping you advance your local OER efforts, the OERI will be scheduling webinars through the summer. Read on for general OER and ZTC related news, followed by our webinar schedule for June.

 

Cal OER August 3-5, 2022

No-Cost Section Level Data Element

 

The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) recently announced a new Instructional Material Cost data element to be implemented in Summer 2022. In early 2021, the ASCCC took a position that there should be a section level data element that indicates when a course section has no instructional material costs (Zero Textbook Costs or ZTC). This new data element will be used to specify the instructional material costs associated with course sections in the data that your college submits to the CCCCO for apportionment (funding). Unfortunately, the data element options will necessarily result in data errors as there is no appropriate option for course sections that are free but not open educational resources.

OERI Seeking Discipline Leads

 

The ASCCC OERI is recruiting faculty to support our OER advocacy efforts by serving as Discipline Leads during the 2022-2023 academic year. The specific tasks of each Discipline Lead will be determined by the status of OER in the discipline. Each Discipline Lead will serve as a resource for their discipline colleagues and will typically host at least one virtual event each term. Discipline Leads receive a stipend of $500 at the end of each term upon completion of their specified tasks. Expectations and timelines for Discipline Leads hired late in the term will be adjusted appropriately. New Discipline Leads will have the option of beginning their work (with compensation) during the summer.

 

We are currently recruiting Discipline Leads for the following disciplines:

  • Counseling
  • Education
  • Film, Television, and Electronic Media
  • Journalism
  • Music
  • Social Justice Studies

While you may be sick of life in Zoom, you probably don’t want to ever miss a scheduled meeting or an OERI webinar. Rather than having to rely on the organizers of an event, Zoom allows you to set up meeting reminders for yourself – learn how to set up meeting reminders.

In this webinar, we will provide an overview of the basic considerations for developing accessible content and cover topics such as the proper use of headers, lists, links, text considerations, and colors.

  • This is the second webinar in a two-part series covering accessibility essentials. In this session, we will discuss how to approach complex images, the importance of alt text, captions and figure elements, and how to use tables. We will also walk through how to use the free WAVE web accessibility evaluation tool to assess the accessibility of a resource.

  • This second webinar in our 3-part series on LibreTexts is a hands-on workshop where you will practice editing a page. We will demonstrate the elements of the content editor, how to add figures and images, and how to add content boxes. We will also discuss how to build a template page for consistency in your book design.

  • LibreTexts III – Developing a Book and the Remixer
  • The third webinar in our 3-part series on LibreTexts is another hands-on workshop where we will demonstrate a work plan for developing a book. We will begin with a discussion of how to create a textbook template map. Then, you will practice using the remixer to build the framework for a textbook.

H5P Workshop Schedule

 

The OERI and LibreTexts are collaborating to host a series of H5P workshops. Within LibreTexts, LibreStudio (also referred to as Studio) can be used to build H5P assessment activities. Another LibreTexts tool, ADAPT, is designed to allow for assessments to be integrated into a course management system. In other words, ADAPT makes it possible to capture student H5P scores in Canvas.

  • H5P Level I - Introduction to H5P
  • Do you teach in a discipline where interactive exercises are a must? H5P is a tool that can allow you to create the interactive exercises you need. Following a showcase of existing H5P resources that are openly licensed and available for your use, you’ll create your H5P activity. Join us to discover what H5P has to offer and learn how easy it is to integrate interactivity into a LibreTexts.

  • H5P Level II - Building Interactive Content in LibreStudio
  • In this 90-minute hands-on session, participants will build more complex H5P activities that they will integrate into LibreTexts pages. Registrations will be provided with information for setting up a LibreStudio account in advance of the event. The use of ADAPT to integrate H5P into Canvas will also be demonstrated.

  • H5P Level III - Creating Summative Assessments with H5P in ADAPT
  • Creating interactive exercises to increase student engagement may be sufficient for some disciplines, but what about those disciplines that require homework activities and rely on having scores on those activities in the course gradebook? ADAPT is the answer, connecting activities in LibreTexts to the gradebook in Canvas. In this hands-on session, participants will learn how to use ADAPT in LibreTexts and, if locally available, within Canvas. Additional details regarding ADAPT integration into Canvas will be provided prior to the workshop.
