Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00-12:05pm Room B-164

I highly recommend that you also take the support class, ESL 2S [section 3682] - it is offered right after the writing class ESL 2. Students are often much more successful because they took both classes together.

Mindset

Text: Carol Dweck's Mindset: The new Psychology of Success

  • ISBN: 978-0-345-47232-8

If you want to get a head start, purchase the book and read Chapter 1.

Classroom strategies:

We will read the book, talk about what we read in class to make sure everyone understands, and write our essays paragraph by paragraph [reviewing everything along the way]. I will provide lots of help via lectures, activities, and you can always ask questions in class or email me questions :) Online and on campus tutoring is also available.

During the semester, we will write three 5 paragraph essays - the last one including research. We will also have 3 in class essay exams.

Your participation is super important in class, and I look forward to getting to know you in person.

I highly recommend that you also take the writing course ESL 2 for this level. I am teaching ESL 2 [section 0804] on campus Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00-12:05 in B164.

Mindset

Text: Carol Dweck's Mindset: The new Psychology of Success

  • ISBN: 978-0-345-47232-8

If you want to get a head start, purchase the book and read Chapter 1.

Although the class is online, we have the same strategies as we do in the classroom.
We will read the book, use what we read to practice listening, speaking, and grammar skills to improve your sentences and essays as well as your overall language skills. You all have awesome college level brains, and we want to use English in ways to show that.
During the semester, we will do lots of activities in class and do single and group presentations on ideas from the book and related videos.
This class is pass/no pass. It is not graded because the focus isn't the grade, but rather the improvement of your writing and language skills. I find students who take this class with the writing class get better grades overall.
Your participation is super important in class, and I look forward to getting to know on campus.
